Alaa Al Aswany mixes his professional life between dentistry and maintaining his position as the Arab world’s best selling author. His first published piece of fiction, The Yacubian Building, sold several bazillion copies when it first came out in Arabic, and several bazillion more when it was translated into god-knows how many languages. I interviewed him in his dentist clinic in Cairo, where he also writes his books (but not while he’s inspecting teeth).
